Pirates defeat Jaguars 6-1 in FRCC action

Senior goaltender Riley Baye looks on for a shot during the first period on Saturday. Baye had 22 saves, only letting in one goal during the third period.

After falling 3-1 to rival Notre Dame Academy on Thursday Jan. 24, Bay Port (13-6-1 overall, 4-1 FRCC) matched up against Ashwaubenon (8-14-0 overall, 1-7 FRCC) in conference hockey on Jan. 26 at Cornerstone Community Center.

The first period went scoreless as it was a battle of defenses. At 3:03 in the second period, Senior Aaron Ribaar scored on a power play for the Pirates. The Pirates continued to dominate scoring as they scored three more times in the second period alone.

Bryson Hyska picked up the second goal, then Nick Messerschmidt followed scoring two more times to put the pirates up 4-0 after the first two periods of play.

“It felt pretty good to score two times in that game,” said Messerschmidt.

The Pirates would score again in the third period from sophomore Alex Voss. The Jaguars would answer with a goal from Liam Golden at 9:16.

With only about five minutes remaining Jake Boxer scored unassisted to finish the game off in style. Boxer went end to end for his goal.

After losing in a heated battle against Notre Dame only two days before Bay Port was determined to win on Saturday.

“We were all frustrated and wanted to show that we can win,” said Messerschmidt. “Our mindset for the rest of the season is to win every game to improve our ranking for the playoffs.”

Bay Port will play their final two FRCC games this week. Tuesday, Jan. 29 away versus De Pere and Friday, Feb. 1 they will be back at Cornerstone to face off against Sheboygan.
