New year, new me? Probably not
With 2020 finally wrapped up, we now have the opportunity to look ahead into 2021. It can only get better from here, right? We can hope, but unfortunately pretty lights and sparkling grape juice doesn’t fix chronic issues overnight.
Let’s begin with the elephant in the room; no, the pandemic will not disappear just because it’s a new year. After the year we’ve had, everyone deserves a tropical island vacation, but it’s really hard to make plans and resolutions with such a versatile environment. I suppose the palm tree backdrop on zoom will have to do for now.
The most popular New Year’s resolution by far is either to get in shape, exercise more, or lose weight. After 2020, you deserve to lay in bed all day and eat whatever you want. Covid definitely doesn’t help when it comes to people getting out of the house and going to the gym, but even without covid this resolution typically dissipates within the first few months. Nonetheless, I recommend at least going out for a walk or getting a breath of fresh air for the sake of mental, emotional, and physical health.
Another popular resolution is to learn a new skill or hobby. Luckily, most of the time that does not require leaving your house. May I suggest learning stand up comedy? Or maybe knitting? Better yet, you could get organized and redo your house or your room! Organization can be a beneficial skill to master. I believe in you young grasshopper.
One resolution that 2020 obliterated was the resolution to save more money. The big boom of online shopping raked in over $690 billion in 2020 with nearly 1.8 billion shoppers worldwide. I mean even the government gave us money for the sole purpose of spending. If your 2021 New Years resolution is to save money… good luck; we’re both going to need it.
Personally, my new year’s resolution is to be optimistic no matter how chaotic life may seem.
We’ve all had a rough year; we all deserve kindness. If you start to stress out just remember we’re all on a giant spinning rock in outer space revolving around a fireball. So don’t stress, just relax and enjoy the ride.
